Out-of-Home Delivery: Why It’s About More Than Just Lockers
At DELIVER Europe 2025, Geopost's Hervé Crochet and Florian Bonnasse offered a comprehensive view of how out-of-home (OOH) delivery is transforming ecommerce logistics across Europe. Far from being limited to parcel lockers, today's out-of-home models include parcel shops, hybrid infrastructure, mobile solutions, and B2B use cases that span industries.
Lockers Are Only One Piece of the Puzzle
Geopost’s long-running consumer barometer revealed that while lockers have grown sharply in preference — with a +10% rise over the past four years — the future is not singular. Consumers are adopting a multi-location delivery approach, with an average of 2.6 different delivery options in use. Lockers, parcel shops, click & collect, and even workplace deliveries are all part of this flexible ecosystem.
C2C Market: A Major Growth Engine
One of the most powerful enablers of out-of-home delivery has been the rise of C2C commerce. Platforms like Vinted have fuelled this shift, offering low-cost, convenient options to individuals selling and shipping from home. According to Geopost, 72% of surveyed shoppers now engage with C2C platforms — and this volume has pushed parcel shop and locker usage into the mainstream.
Expanding to New Categories
Out-of-home is no longer limited to small or fast-moving goods. In France and Poland, over 20–30% of pet food is delivered to lockers or parcel shops. Some large parcel shops can even accommodate sofas. Digital-native brands are leveraging shops as micro-hubs to manage volume as they scale. Maintenance sectors, such as lift repair or construction, are also using lockers and shops to store spare parts close to where they're needed.
Building a Truly Hybrid Network
Geopost now operates 132,000 out-of-home points across Europe — 34,000 lockers and 98,000+ shops — with ambitions to double locker infrastructure while maintaining shop availability. Their hybrid model reflects local adoption patterns, whether in locker-heavy Baltics or shop-favouring southern Europe.
They are also innovating with portable lockers for construction sites, solar-powered refrigeration lockers for fresh goods, and parcel shops with fitting rooms to reduce fashion returns.
Seamless Tech and Experience
Central to the OOH expansion is Geopost’s digital ecosystem, particularly the MyDPD app with over 32 million users. The app allows consumers to reroute deliveries, change pickup times or locations, and access locker or shop pickups easily. For retailers, it enables in-flight parcel management, delivery preference setting, and real-time updates — empowering a unified home and out-of-home experience.
Cross-Border Infrastructure
With more than 500 locker-to-locker and shop-to-shop connections across 22 countries, Geopost is heavily invested in cross-border expansion. They now offer seamless OOH delivery and returns across Europe, supporting B2C and C2C sellers alike.
What’s Next: Robots, Data, and Smart Design
Looking ahead, Geopost is testing Level 4 autonomous delivery robots with 5-hour battery life, especially for densely populated or high-demand areas. They're also working on dedicated drop-off bins to manage C2C returns more efficiently. Data will increasingly inform how delivery models are scaled — from gamified incentives to drive pickup speed, to predictive routing and locker occupancy forecasting.
In conclusion, out-of-home delivery is no longer a niche or locker-only solution. It’s a dynamic, evolving infrastructure that blends physical flexibility with digital intelligence — supporting faster, greener, and more convenient delivery for everyone.
